Srinagar may go Delhi way to curb traffic jam

Srinagar: To overcome daily traffic jam in Srinagar city after the closure of Rambagh-Hyderpora road due to flyover construction, the government will seek public opinion about using odd-even formula on the pattern of New Delhi.

Minister of State for Transport, Science and Technology Sunil Sharma told KNS that the government is aware of the traffic jam arising due to closure of the Rambagh-Hyderpora road and will ‘find a way out’ of the chaotic situation.

“We will discuss the odd-even formula with all the stakeholders, district administration in Srinagar to seek public opinion on it. If the formula works for us, then we will go ahead with it,” Sharma told KNS.

The minister said that the government will “definitely” find a way out to deal with the traffic jam in the city.

“I have a meeting with State Road Transport Corporation on May 6. I will discuss odd-even formula there as well,” he said.

Odd-even formula was started by AAP government in New Delhi to tackle the chaotic traffic jam, and vehicles with odd and even numbers would run on the respective dates during a month.

Srinagar city (south) is witnessing traffic jam daily following the closure of the Rambagh-Hyderpora road stretch and diversion of traffic to other routes as the Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover is being constructed. The deadline for completion of the flyover is March 2017.

Besides the closure of Mehjoor Nagar Bridge, for being unsafe, has also increased intensity of traffic jam in the southern part of the city. (KNS)
