Srinagar: After intensive searches and intermittent exchanges of gunfire for a month, army today said it has scaled own its operation against militants in Manigah forest area of north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
We have scaled down our operation in Manigah but not called off. The combing operation would continue in the area, a defense ministry official said.
The army started its operation in the area after it recovered body of a militant in Kumkadi forests of Manigah who was believed to have died due to severe cold on November 10. The militant was believed to have gone to the Line of Control to receive the infiltrators. Before being intercepted, the group was trapped in the mountainous terrain due to heavy rains and snowfall, the sources had said.
In the operation, army lost a colonel who was commanding 41 RR due to the bullets of militants in forest area of Behak near Sonwali in Manigah on November 17.
On November 23, an unidentified militant was killed in the exchange of gunfire between army and militants. However since then the army could not locate any militant even as there was intermittent exchange of the fire between the two sides. A Lt Colonel was also injured during the operation and he is undergoing treatment at Delhi hospital.
