More restrictions today
SRINAGAR: Police has said that it will impose restrictions in sensitive areas of the city to prevent traditional Ashura procession on the 10th Muharram, Saturday.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Syed Mujtaba Gillani said that Ashura procession on the traditional routes will not be allowed as situation was not conducive.
But procession that are taken in other areas will be allowed, Gillani told said.
He said that police will also impose restriction in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incident. However, the police chief did not the specify ate sensitive areas where restrictions will be imposed.
During the lunar month of Muharram, Muslims, particularly Shias across the world take out processions to express their loyalty to Imam Hussain and his band of followers who were mercilessly massacred in the Iraqi city of Kerbala in the year 680.
The 8th and 10th Muharram processions remain banned in Srinagar with successive governments citing security issues. Before the ban was imposed in 1990, Ashura procession was taken out from Abi Guzar to Imam Bargah Zadibal.
Only small mourning rallies and processions are allowed in select Shia dominated areas.
