Doda: Two Special Police Officials (SPOs), who recently went into hiding along with their service rifles were shot dead by government forces after they were spotted and trapped in Bagwa hamlet of border district Doda of Jammu region.
Both the SPO’s Gul Muhammad, a resident of Shah Mohalla Srinagar and Reyaz Ahmed, son of Abdul Rashid resident of Marmat (Doda) were posted at District Police Lines Doda. The duo ran away and allegedly joined militant ranks on September 9 last month. Before getting inducted in Jammu Kashmir Police Department, the duo, according to sources were involved in militancy. Reyaz had surrendered before the police in 1999 in Kathua while Gul Muhammad laid down his arms in 2010 before joining police.
A high alert was sounded in Doha region and a manhunt was launched to nab them and phone call details of both the SPOs were being scanned to find any possible lead about their whereabouts
According to the CNS, after receiving inputs about their presence in Bagwa Village, Government forces cordoned off the village and eliminated them during a brief encounter. The officials said that one of the policemen was carrying AK-47 rifle while the other was armed with INSAS rifle and both the weapons were recovered at the site of encounter.
Hundreds of people meanwhile joined the funeral prayers of the two slain militants and Doda town observed a spontaneous shut down to mourn their death, reports reaching here said.
