SRINAGAR: PDP President , Mehbooba Mufti ,Friday left for Saudi Arabia heading a two member Hajj delegation. The visit comes at a time when tension has gripped the state of Jammu and Kashmir after the beef ban controversy. This tension plus the less than satisfactory performance of the PDP-BJP government in the state has had a negative impact on the PDP in the vale. Amidst the deep problems both the state and the party are facing , Mehboobas Hajj becomes all the more curious and puzzling.
President of ruling coalition partner, PDP, and Member of Parliament from South Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti thus becomes the first lady from sub-continent to lead Hajj delegation to Makkah Mukaramah.
The other member of the delegation is a senior BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh, Anwar Mohammad Khan.
Reports reaching here said that the delegation would meet the Haj Minister of Saudi Arabia and would return on October 7.
In the past, the Haj delegation from India used to comprise a large number of members. After the 2012 Supreme Court order, the government stopped sending big delegations, reports added.
A law graduate, Mehbooba was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. She has been responsible for the partys success and dethroning the National Conference in 2002 and 2014 Assembly polls. This year, 1,36,020 Indian pilgrims will perform Haj pilgrimage. Of them, 1,00,020 will participate through the Haj Committee of India and 36,000 through private tour operators.
