SRINAGAR: Advocating implementation of beef ban law in letter and spirit in Jammu and Kashmir, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators Thursday said that they would oppose any bill that would be brought in the assembly for de-criminalising bovine slaughter, even the bill submitted by opposition National Conference.
The BJP legislators said that they would raise their voice against the NCs bill submitted by party legislators in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
Seeking abolishment of the constitutional provisions criminalizing bovine slaughter in the State, three NC legislators MLA Khanyar Ali Muhammad Sagar, MLA Sonawari Muhammad Akbar Lone and MLA Kangan Mian Altaf Ahmad submitted a bill in LA on Wednesday.
However, BJP legislators maintained that they would oppose the bill in the next session and would press for the enforcement of the high court orders in the state.
There is High Court order on bovine slaughter in the state and this law must be enforced in the state without any delay. We will oppose any such bill in the Assembly challenging the law, Satpal Sharma, BJP MLA from Jammu West constituency said.
He said that BJP already has clarified that any court order must be imposed forthwith and violation of any law will not be tolerated. Our partys stand is that law must be enforced and we will oppose every move in full strength challenging the court orders, he said.
Another BJP MLA Ajay Nanda said that he along with his other party MLAs would challenge NCs bill in the Assembly. The orders have come from the High Court not from any political party. So there must be complete ban on the bovine slaughter. We will raise our voice against this bill and wont let anyone to violate the court orders, Nanda said.
He said that BJP senior leaders including Deputy CM Dr Nirmal Singh have already welcomed the court orders and he would abide by them.
NC submits bill
National Conference on Wednesday moved a bill in the Legislative Assembly for the forthcoming session seeking omission of Sections 298-A, 298-B, 298-C and 298-D of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
Senior NC leaders and legislators, headed by party General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar submitted the bill in the Assembly Secretariat on Wednesday.
Sagar said the existing law banning sale and consumption of beef was in complete violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed to the citizens under the constitution. The State can neither force any person to follow a particular line nor can Government interfere in anybodys religion. We have sought amendment in the law for revoking the ban, Sagar said.
We have already asked the PDP-BJP Government to bring in an ordinance ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to amend the relevant sections of the penal code so that people are not arrested and harassed while performing the ritual Eid sacrifices in the State. But it has become very evident that PDP has surrendered its voice for the lure of remaining in power. National Conference is very serious about this issue and this is very important to the people of this State. We will bring in the bill in the Legislative Assembly, the NC General Secretary added.
