SHOPIAN: A young woman identified as Shokey Jan, 24, was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws Friday afternoon injuring her critically. She is battling with her life in the SMHS Burn Ward.
Married to Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh of Nadigam in the South Kashmirs Shopian district, the woman, according to her brother, Ghulam Mohi-ud-din, was initially beaten up by her husband helped by his brother Mohammad Shaban Sheikh. They first beat her up and then doused her with Kerosene oil to set her afire later, her brother said. One of neighbours of the victim informed us on telephone about the incident.
The suspects set her afire at around 2.00 in the afternoon and then locked her in a room till evening, said Farooq Ahmad, another relative of Shokey.
Taking cognizance of the issue, Local MLA, Advocate Mohammad Yusuf Bhat, rushed to the district hospital Shopian and enquired about the victims condition.
Police are reported to have begun the investigation into the incident.
After giving her first aid, the patient was rushed to SMHS Srinagar for specialized treatment. The condition of the patient was very critical, one of the relatives said.
