Srinagar: Party veteran Ghulam Muhammad Bhat was elected as the new Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir in the election held at party headquarters here on Saturday.
Ghulam Muhammad Bhat was elected as president of the organization under the patronage of election commission nominated by the organization. Out of 125 votes polled by Numaindigaan (Council of Representatives), Bhat secured 61 while his nearest rival, incumbent Ameer, Muhammad Abdullah Wani bagged 42 votes only, Jamaat spokesperson Zahid Ali said.
Bhat will assumed the charge on 1st of September for a term of three years.
Bhat had been the president of the organization from 1985 to 88, 1997 to 2000 and in 2000 he was again elected for three years. This is the fourth time, Bhat has been elected as the president of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Bhat is a resident of Latishar area of Sopore town. He received his early education from his native village and later completed his BA B.Ed from Kashmir University.
