BUDGAM: Eighty-eight villages in Budgam district are facing the threat of landslide, authorities said on Friday.
“Out of 500 villages in the district, 88 villages, mostly in Chadoora and Chrar-i-Sharief areas, are under the threat of landslide,” District Development Commissioner Manzoor Ahmad Lone said quoting a survey conducted by field officers and other agencies.
Lone, who chaired a high-level meeting in the district to review the situation arising out of landslide, said a contingency plan has been chalked out to deal with the situation and administration has geared its men and machinery to combat any eventuality.
“Proactive measures have been taken to combat any eventuality in the landslide-hit areas of the district especially in the most vulnerable parts of Chadoora and Chrar-i-Sharief,” he said.
Giving details about the arrangements being put in place, he said temporary shelter camps have been established in various government institutions and other available buildings at Nagam, Lolipora, Chrar-i-Sharief, Bemina, Waterhaul and Pakherpora for the displaced families.
“To have better coordination, the affected areas have been distributed in three zones, each zone would be looked after by a team of officers consisting of Tehsildar, Block Development Officer, Zonal Education Officer and Village Level Worker.
The Naib Tehsildars have been directed to assist the team, he said, adding that ration, blankets, tents and other edibles have been kept in large quantity at established camps. 16 members of two families were killed in a landslide in the district following incessant rains early this week.
Marriage Party Rescued From Flash Floods
JAMMU: Police today rescued 26 members of a marriage party trapped in the flash-floods in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, where district administration has issued alert in view of rising water level in the rivers.
“Soon after receiving the report of 26 persons of a marriage party of 3 families trapped at Dadwara in Mohra- Rehinbrohra in the middle of swelled river, a rescue team lead by Tehsildar, Billawar, Manmeet Kumar and local police rushed to the spot,” Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said.
“After a three-hour-long rescue operation, all the trapped persons were evacuated safely,” he said.
The DC said that due to heavy rainfall in higher reaches of Bani and Billawar flood alert was issued.
“Sewa river crossed danger mark and Naaj and Bhini rivers were reported to be flowing above danger level. Water level in Ranjit Sagar Dam was reported to be 517 feet against danger mark of 524 feet,” he said.
Dr Choudhary said “owing to the continuous rainfall and rising level of rivers, the district administration has issued alert”.
He further said that at least seven houses were reported to have been damaged in Ramkote, Billawar and Bani Tehsils.
“Tents and blankets have been rushed to the affected areas by local administration,” the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that field functionaries of all the departments as well as police are on high alert to tackle the situation.
