Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the only link connecting Kashmir Valley with rest of the world, was opened for traffic today, five days after the road was closed in the wake of landslides caused by heavy rains and snow.
“The highway was opened for one-way traffic and was allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar,” a senior cop of traffic department said.
Yesterday, the authorities had allowed the stranded vehicles towards Valley after landslides were cleared at several places. However, the vehicles from Jammu were not allowed to move ahead.
The official said that 1700 vehicles out of 2000 have been cleared by Friday evening while remaining vehicles have been cleared today morning and later fresh traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was also restored.
Pertinently, the heavy rains and snowfall on Monday caused landslides at some places including Ramsu, Panthal, Seri and Gumroo in Banihal which forced the closure of the road. Despite efforts, the road could not be opened for last five days and traffic was allowed for the first time today.
Meanwhile, an official of the MeT department told GNS that heavy rain / snowfall will likely to occur at few places in Kashmir Valley in next 24-hours. (GNS)
assured all support for smooth movement of traffic on the National Highway, which has been severely affected due to difficult weather conditions. (GNS)
