Police rescue 58 persons from Kulgam district
Srinagar: The crucial Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for second day today, while the airlines resumed operations, even as fresh snowfall and rains were reported from many area of the Valley on Tuesday.
Official sources said that 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for vehicular traffic for the second day today due to landslides at Panthal and fresh snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel. Though no vehicles were stranded at the highway, the Beacon authorities were making efforts to reopen the highway by removing the landslides.
No vehicle was allowed to ply on the highway because of the inclement weather. Efforts are on to make the highway through. If weather remains pleasant, the highway will reopen tomorrow for vehicular traffic, a senior official of Traffic Police said.
The air traffic, however, restored today after the visibility improved. All the flights to operated at the Sheikh ul Alam international airport.
Officials said that 27 families comprising fifty eight people, including women and children were rescued by police and army from Waltengo Nard, areas of south Kashmir Kulgam district in view of avalanche warning issued by the weather department. All of them have been shifted to safer places.
Meanwhile, an official of the MeT department said that Snow/rain will occur at isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir in next 24-hours, the official said. (GNS)
