Srinagar: The authorities on Friday cleared all stranded passenger vehicles on strategic 293-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway even as the road remained closed for traffic, a top official Friday said.
IGP Traffic, Muneer Ahmad Khan said that yesterday 700 were cleared after which the Highway closed due to heavy snowfall of about 2 feet at Jawahar Tunnel area and shooting stones at Gamro and Panthal. He said following worse weather, the vehicles were stopped at Banihal, Ramban and Chanderkote.
He said 10 meters of road had caved-in at Magarkote between Ramsoo and Panthal and was restored on Friday morning.
The IGP said around 500 stranded vehicles including a250 passenger vehicles were allowed to ply from Ramsoo to Banihal towards Kashmir today morning. At 2 pm, we allowed around 600 stranded Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) from Magarkote to Panthal for towards tunnel and have crossed, he said. However, it was one way traffic, he said.
He said there were around 600 stranded trucks and 400 of them crossed Magarkote and Gamroo area towards Kashmir. He said 600 stranded trucks and load carriers between Chanderkote and Ramsoo would be cleared by 11pm tonight.
If weather remains dry and all stranded load carriers between Chanderkote and Ramsoo are cleared by 11 pm today, the road would be open tomorrow on Saturday, the IGP said. He, however, said only light motor vehicles and unloaded trucks would be allowed to ply on Highway. We wont allow vehicles to cross Qazigund before 8 in the morning nor after 12 in the noon because we have to treat road after that, he said.
