Ganderbal: Violent clashes prompted authorities to clamp curfew on Tulmulla township of District Ganderbal Friday night. The clashes broke out after some people caught Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh of Saloora, a clerk at the office of Zonal Education Officer with a woman allegedly engaged in an immoral act on a day when government offices were closed on account of holiday of Jumatul Vida.
The late night protests allegedly instigated by a local Imam forced authorities to impose curfew Tulamula area.
According to the reports, a government employee was spotted by some locals with a girl in ZEO Office in the jurisdiction of police station Kheerbawani when the offices were closed on account of holiday.
Some people entered into the office and pounced on him giving him a severe thrashing. In the resultant mêlée the woman managed to escape from the spot with the help of some elderly citizens.
Agitated mob who were bent on lynching the accused set his motor cycle (JK01L-2490) on fire. The timely intervention of police saved the accused from the wrath of the violent mob, the police spokesman said.
A police official said that the situation was under control after the police saved a government employee from the wrath of people.
Police rescued the accused and managed to pacify the protestors after some law and order problem.
The spokesman said the mob also tried to set the office building on fire, however, police foiled their attempt. Police said it has registered an FIR vide number 36/2014 against the employee.
Reports said that during late night hours a local Imam accused police of shielding the culprit. The remarks of local Imam allegedly provoked youth who came out of the mosque and attacked police and CRPF personnel deployed in the area with the stones.
Reports said that during the clashes at least 12 persons including some cops were injured. Locals alleged that some policemen thrashed the Imam that created trouble in the area. Police according to reports arrested four persons for their alleged role in violence and stone-pelting.
Addition SP Ganderbal Mr Param Vir told CNS that it was local Imam Abdul Hamid Yousuf who instigated people for violence. This Imam was telling people on loud speaker that police has no right to punish the guilty (accused) as it is the job of people to punish him under Sharia. Police exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the violent protestors, he said.
Authorities imposed restrictions in the area to bring the situation under control. A police official said that situation in the area is under control and people are being allowed to move freely.
