SRINAGAR: A Special Operation Group man was killed and four including an Inspector sustained injuries after suspected militants cornered a police party at Chotta Bazar in Sopore.
The incident took place when SOG party had disembarked from their armoured vehicle to disperse few odd stone-pelters at around 2.15 am.
Police sources said few miscreants indulged in stone-pleting at Chotta Bazar near Jamia Masjid Sopore. An SOG party led by Inspector Dilraj in a bid to control the situation parked their armoured vehicle on one side of the road and came down from the vehicle. As soon as they embarked from the vehicle, unidentified gun men hurled a grenade on them which exploded with a bang. Gunmen then sprayed bullets on the police party killing constable Muhammad Sayed Khan (368SPR) a resident of frontier district of Kupwara on the spot, a police official said adding that the injured cops including Inspector were shifted to BB Cantonment where they are recuperating.
Police identified the injured cops as Inspector Dilraj Singh (7305NGO), Constable Yousuf-al-Umar (29IRP) from third Battalion, Constable Inayatullah (731AP7) and Constable Imtiyaz (709AP).
Eyewitnesses said that soon after the incident large contingent of government forces cordoned off the area, however, no arrest was made.
Reports said that barely an hour after the incident scores of youth came on roads and attacked police personnel with stones. During the clashes two persons who were reportedly on way to Jamia Masjid to offer Fajar Prayers were injured. Both the injured from Arampora hamlet Mudasir Kaloo and Mudasir Sheikh were discharged from the SKIMS.
Meanwhile Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility for the attack in Sopore.
In a tele-statement to KNS Baleeg-u-Din, the Hizb spokesman said: Our cadres carried out the attack in Sopore.
In South Kashmirs Bijbehara town, unidentified gunmen fired at a police constable Altaf Ahmad resident of Eidgah Srinagar while he was on his duty at Goriwan Chowk Bijbehara. Altaf was shifted to SMHS hospital Srinagar but he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Agencies
