SRINAGAR: Four people were killed Tuesday when a cooking gas cylinder (LPG) exploded in a community kitchen in Baltal base camp of the Amarnath Yatra, police said.
A cooking gas cylinder exploded accidentally in Shiv Shakti langar in Baltal base camp, police said.
“The explosion resulted in death of four relatives of sewadars (volunteers) at the langar,” police said.
Langars are the free community kitchens set up by various religious organisations to serve food to all the visitors for free.
Police said the incident took place at about 0415 hrs, when the breakfast was being prepared and the leakage of an LPG pipe resulted in gas cylinder burst.
Due to explosion fire broke out in the Shiv Shakti Bhandara at Dhomail.
Four persons namely Gurdeep Singh son of Baldev Singh resident of Mansar Punjab, Yadander Singh son of Major Singh resident of Batinda Punjab, Sandeep son of Tarseem resident of Mansar Punjab and Babu Singh resident of Batinda Punjab died.
Three persons Manjeet Singh son of Buta Singh resident of Batinda Punjab and Jasbir Singh son of Bhol Singh resident of Batinda Punjab and Harpaul Singh son of Major Singh resident of Mansar Punjab were injured. The injured were treated at nearby hospital and are stated to be stable.
Meanwhile, the yatra is continuing smoothly on Baltal and Pahalgam routes.
So far, over three lakh pilgrims have participated in the yatra which started June 28. The yatra will end Aug 10.:
