SRINAGAR: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police sustained multiple injuries after he was allegedly by soldiers at Baltal area in central Kashmirs Ganderbal district Monday evening.
A police official said Tuesday that ASI Nazir Ahmad Wani (belt no. 102 Gbl), a resident of Baramulla, intercepted private car of an army captain and a few of his associates at the drop gate of Baltal base camp on Monday afternoon. The ASI asked the captain, who was in civvies, to show permission to take the vehicle ahead. The police didn’t allow the army officer to take the vehicle towards the base camp.
Late evening, the officer came along with his soldiers and thrashed ASI allegedly. He was immediately shifted to nearby medical unit where doctors operated upon him (under medical ticket registration no. Mrd 882). The doctors at Baltal shifted the injured officer to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment, the official said.
Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent Farooq Jan told GNS that a patient named Nazir Ahmad Wani was received by the hospital on Monday evening.
He has multiple injuries in right arm and lower back. However, he is stable, Jan said.
Talking to GNS, the injured ASI said that he was beaten by army because he asked the captain to show the documents of the car which his driver was taking to the base camp.
The army captain was very angry because we had stopped his vehicle earlier in the day. We followed the orders of the government. However, it didnt go well with army, Wani said.
Following the incident, the senior police, CRPF, army and district administration officers rushed to the Baltal and chaired a meeting, police sources told GNS. The officers who attend the meeting include IGP Kashmir, Abdul Ganir Mir, IG CRPF, 3-Sector Army Commander, DC Ganderbal and SP Ganderbal. Even though the meeting is learnt to have advocated filing the FIR against the army captain, the same was not filed when last reports came in.
Armys Srinagar-based senior defense official in a statement that army had initiated a departmental inquiry into the allegations. He said that scuffle involving an Army officer and ASI of JK Police took place at Baltal on 21 July. The issue was immediately taken up by the Army authorities of Chinar Corps and Senior Police officials. RR Sector Commander and IG Kashmir, JK Police met at Baltal to investigate the incident jointly.
In the meantime, Army authorities have ordered an enquiry into the incident. Authorities have assured that the personnel found to be allegedly involved in the incident have been replaced while the matter is under investigation. A strict disciplinary action will be taken against the guilty, the officer said.
Pertinently, over 400 tents of locals were set on fire allegedly by CRPF following a scuffle between locals and non-locals community kitchen owners in the area on July 18.
Earlier on July 16, 2014, Police had filed a case against army under FIR 142/2014 u/s 307, 353 for obstructing policemen while performing duties following the army crane truck crushed to death seven persons at HMT in outskirts of Srinagar city. Before that, three policemen, including two officers had sustained injuries on May 23 this year, after army troopers allegedly thrashed them when the police team had stopped three buses of Army High Altitude Warfare School in Sonamarg tourist resort were heading to the school due to heavy traffic coming from Zojilla and reportedly told them to wait. {sheikh Junaid is a staff with newsgathering agency GNS}
