Srinaga: Prof. Saifuddin Soz, MP made special mention in the Rajya Sabha today saying that the plan to clean River Ganga is possible and doable proposition.
There is no need to politicize it. We must go into the question of failure of our river cleaning initiatives. Indian rivers are today dying. Some are already dead. We take water for multiple use and we return only sewage and waste. Some rivers are now called drains, a statement said.
Some cities, especially the ones close to Ganga do not have sewage networks. The methods of pollution management shall have to be reinvented for our cities . There is no doubt that Ganga could carry the priority. But, the plan has to be a comprehensive situation for the entire country.
The statement said: It will require a tough and serious effort. A redirection of the programme should be devised to make the effort effective. It is that way that our rivers particularly Ganga will be rejuvenated and cleaned. I believe that can be done.
Many good steps were taken during the recent Kumbh. That effort must continue. It would be interesting to know why Ganga Action Plan undertaken by the Ministry of Environment and Forests did not meet the desired success. The Centre for Science and Environment could be of great help to the system to clean Ganga and other rivers.
