SRINAGAR: Restrictions in old Srinagar city in view of a separatist rally affected normal life across Srinagar on Friday. Chairman of Hurriyat Conference M Mirwaiz Umar had planned to rally at Muncipal Park residency road to celebrate 50th foundation day of his own party Awami Action Committee.
Restrictions remained in force in and around the areas falling under the jurisdiction of five police stations including Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safakadal, M R Gunj and Rainawari.
People in Old City alleged they were not allowed to move out of their houses. A large number of police and CRPF personnel remained deployed in different areas, directing people to remain indoors. Concertina wires were laid by police to restrict the movement of people in sensitive areas.
Life also remained disrupted due to spontaneous shutdown in city centre Lal Chowk. Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed.
Scores of AAC and APHC activists were arrested and lodged in police station Kothi Bagh after they tried to breach the police curbs and take out a procession near TRC mosque . Mirwaiz Umr Farooq and other key leaders of the amalgam were placed under house arrest, according to a statement by Hurriyat M.
