Srinagar: A youth was thrashed mercilessly by some Shikara owners after he tried to stop them from charging exuberant rates from the tourists near Kohnakhan Ghat in tourist hub Dalgate Srinagar, CNS reports.
Tourists alleged that shikara owners operating at Kohnakhan ghat are charging Rs 400 for an hours ride while tourist police are acting as mute spectators, taking no action against the offenders.
I am a stranger here and dont know anything about this place. I agreed to pay Rs 400 for an hours ride to a shikara owner but fortunately, a Kashmiri youth informed me about the actual rate that I was supposed to pay. These shikara owners thrashed that youth and threatened him dire consequences, a foreign tourist said adding that tourist police must check these elements who indulge in exploitation and loot.
The youth namely Ajaz Ahmed from Khanyar said that all but six shikara owners caught hold of him and beat him to pulp. Displaying his injuries that had suffered at the hands of these shikara owners, Ajaz alleged that they even snatched his golden chain. I fail to understand why they beat me up when I simply requested them in our mother tongue not to loot tourists, he said adding that he has filed a complaint in police post Nehru Park.
A police official admitted that Ajaz was injured when he approached them. We have sent a police party to nab the assailants and action will be initiated against them as per law, he said.
