SRINAGAR: Unknown gunmen shot dead an elderly person at Awantipore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district late Saturday evening, police officials said.
Gunmen fired upon Ghulam Mohdammad Dar (82) son of Abli Dar of Dogripora village of Awantipore late this evening near his home. He was returning home after night prayers in a nearby mosque, police said.
Dar, father of PDP sarpanch Mohammadd Shaban Dar, was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, he said.
Police said they apprehend that gunmen may have mistaken Dar as Sarpanch. However there was no independent confirmation of it.
Dar’s nephew Waseem was a militant with the Hizbul Mujahideen and died in an encounter with the security forces in January.
Meanwhile, Army, Special Operation Group of Police and CRPF cordoned off the area and launched the hunt to nab the culprits.
