JAMMU: Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam today called for diversification of agriculture and horticulture on modern lines to boost rural economy, production and productivity in the state.
Speaking in the debate on demand of grants for agriculture and allied sector in Legislative assembly today, Tarigami said it was imperative to provide support to the farming community by exploring all possible marketing channels to make agriculture production remunerative which would improve living conditions of farmers. He enjoined upon the government to ensure that farmers are provided quality agriculture inputs like improved seeds and standard fertilizers to give boost to agriculture production.
He said that the state economy is agro-based adding that the state prosperity and development lies in a smiling farmer, living conditions of the farming community on both and economic fronts is improved. He said though some initiatives have been taken by the state and central governments in this regard, much remains to be done. H urged for massive and determined initiatives for giving fresh impetus to the rural economy adding that all the stake holders including policy planners shall have to put their heads together in this regard.
Tarigami said that it was a big question mark as to why a state like J&K , which has most congenial agro climatic conditions in its all the three regions for agriculture , horticulture, sheep and animal husbandry had to import major quality of its mutton,, poultry, milk and related products from other states He asked the agriculture scientists and officers to ponder how the huge potential in animal and sheep husbandry is exploited, optimally for over all benefit of the state especially farming community.
Making available dependable irrigation facilities to the farmers was primary necessity to give boost to agriculture, sheep and animal husbandry sectors, Tarigami observed and asked the government to make concrete measures for the purpose. While suggesting some more measures for boosting agriculture, sheep and animal husbandry activities in the state, Tarigami, urged for providing hassle free credit facilities to the farmers. He also urged for a vibrant and comprehensive crop insurance scheme for the farmers to protect their produce from the outrage and vagaries of climate.
Tarigami also presented to the Speaker of the Legislative assembly a copy of memorandum of Chopan Community which inter alia contains demand to accord scheduled tribe (ST) status to Chopans on the analogy of Gadhi community in Jammu division. He hoped that other demand in the memorandum also be taken due cognizance by the august House.
