NEW DELHI: Amid raging debate over rising crimes against women in India, one more sexual harassment case has surfaced and this time a teacher in Aligarh Muslim University has reportedly molested a Kashmiri female student.
Though, Public Relations Officer of the University Dr Rahat Abrar remained tight lipped over the issue, however, the AMU administration confirmed the incident saying that the guilty professor has been suspended and a detailed inquiry has been ordered into the matter.
According to reports, a Kashmiri female student of LLM first year registered a complaint with Dean of Law Faculty, Prof Iqbal Ali Khan against chairman Law Department Prof Shabir Ahmed, alleging that she was molested by the said professor after he called her into his chamber in context with some fault in her project paper.
The accused teaches Women and Law, Criminal Law and Gender Justice in the AMU.
One of senior members from Law faculty said on condition of anonymity that University Administration after taking strong note suspended the accused with immediate effect and constituted a committee to probe the matter.
He confirmed that a case has also been registered against the accused at Civil Lines police station under section 509,354(A) and 354 of the IPC.
When contacted Registrar Captain (Rtd) Shahrukh Shamsheed said that a female professor who is currently the Chairperson Women Cell has been appointed to probe the matter. The tainted Professor had been suspended with immediate effect. It is not for the first time that such allegations have been levelled against the accused but in past also an enquiry committee was constituted to probe his conduct, he said adding that the tainted professor will face the music if proven guilty.
