Srinagar As part of Continued Medical Education (CME), focused to create awareness and provide insight in new advances in Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) conducted a scientific program Case Capsules in GI Surgery on Thursday.
Former Director and Vice President National Board of Examinations Professor Dr S Jalal who was the Chief Guest inaugurated the program. He stressed for collective for approach. We should shun individualism and must have collective goal. People with better ideas face resistance but we must stand by virtue and deliver with commitment for better patient care system, he added.
Director SKIMS and ex-officio secretary to government Dr Showkat A Zaragar appreciated the contribution of Dr Jalal for the Institute. He said department of surgical department has come up well and evolved as one of the best centre at SKIMS despite odds. Todays program is of great educational value and will benefit the students, he said.
HoD Surgical Gastroenterology Dr Omar Javed Shah in his welcome address said that the department is busy in providing optimal treatment to the needy patients. Every effort is being made to centralize various advanced procedures so that the multidisciplinary treatment team develops substantial expertise in the management of such patients. This concept of volume output relationship is vital to the development of Centre of Excellence and the administration stands firmly behind achieving this goal, he added.
According to PRO SKIMS, Kulsoom Bhat, during the event three scientific sessions were held in which papers on critical subjects were presented by faculty and post-doctoral students of SKIMS. Some of the important topics deliberated included- Haemobilia secondary to portal vein injury and liver abscess, unique cases of failed ERCP, Jejunal tumour and emphysematous pancreatitis, she added.
It is pertinent to mention that the department of Surgical Gastroenterology is world over recognized as one of the leading centers in the country involved in portal hypertension and pancreatic surgeries. The department is headed by Dr Omar Javed who is a prominent name in the field and has a major contribution in the field of portal hypertension in the form of a technique acknowledged worldwide as Omars technique and recently introduced Superior Approach Technique for the treatment of periampullary and pancreatic head tumours.
