SOPORE: Panic gripped suburban Sopore on Wednesday morning when unknown gunmen shot dead a protected politician and social activist and immediately fled in a waiting vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that few gunmen appeared near a petrol pump in Shakergund area of Sopore and pumped bullets in Kifayat Husain Mir a resident of Bohripora, Sopore.
Reports said that Mir was busy in talking to someone on phone when he was shot at point blank range.
Mir was a protected person, however his two guards were not with him when he was shot dead. He was immediately taken to hospital, however the doctors declared him brought dead.
A police official said that Kifayat had unsuccessfully contested the 2008 assembly elections from Sopore constituency as an independent candidate and was provided with two armed security guards. He said that the militant who fired at Kifayat fled in a waiting vehicle.
Kifayat was known in the area for having close links with the police for past several years.
The deceased was 45 years old and is survived with his wife and three children. Sopore police has registered a case in this regard and investigation has been taken up, it added.
Pertinently, militants carried out a deadly ambush in Srinagar, killing eight army soldiers and injuring 14 others on Monday while a few days before militants killed two policemen at Amira Kadal Srinagar.
