SRINAGAR: Scores of supporters of fake Dervish from Khansahed area of Budgam were arrested by police in Srinagar on Thursday when they staged a protest demanding his immediate release from the custody.
The supporters chanting slogans Deenas Bahara, Syed Gulzara were bundled into police vehicles after they tried to move towards main road.
Protesters included both men and women. They clashed with police while some of the women protesters tried to beat a lady police official.
Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested scores of the protesters while many of them fled from the scene.
The protesters tried to create law and order problem, because of which they were put under preventive custody, police officials said.
Protestors told reporters that Pir Baba was innocent and has been implicated in a false case at the behest of some unscrupulous elements. We have no animosity with anyone but some people have succeeded in maligning the image of Gulzar Ahmed Bhat, they claimed.
Pertinently, self-styled Darvish Gulzar Ahmed Bhat aka Syed Gulzar was arrested after few minor girls made startling revelations that he exploited them sexually.
Gulzar has been booked under section 376 (Punishment for rape). (CNS)
