SRINAGAR: In yet another hint that he was gearing for a broader role, the chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Thursday said that his alliance could not be stopped from taking up public issues and problems.
Even as the Hurriyat Conference is fully discharging its political responsibilities for resolving the Kashmir issue, it cannot close its eyes to every-day problems and hardships faced by the Kashmiri masses, a statement quoted the Mirwaiz as having told public delegations today.
The Hurriyat Conference is fully aware of the problems and issues of the people, and under no circumstances can it be stopped from representing public issues and grievances, the Mirwaiz was quoted as having said.
According to the Hurriyat (M), several public delegations had called on the Mirwaiz at his Nigeen residence with issues like compensation for property acquired for road-widening, availability of power and LPG, and rising prices.
In his capacity as a religious leader, the delegations urged the Mirwaiz to take up issues like moral degradation, social evils and decay, with vigour to prevent the destruction and disintegration of society, it said.
