NEW DELHI: Undeterred by police lathi-charge, teargas and water cannon, thousands of angry protestors laid siege to the country’s power centre of North Block and South Block for the entire day on Saturday demanding death sentence for the rapists of the 23-year-old paramedic.
The main access routes to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister’s Office atop Raisina Hills, were cut off by heavy police barricades which included heavy vehicles blocking the march of the protestors.
Seething with anger, the protestors mostly youth, swarmed the entire four kilometre stretch from India Gate to Vijay Chowk.
The entire Rajpath was blocked and the iconic Vijay Chowk traffic island was taken over by slogan-shouting agitators who were waving tricolours and placards.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde discussed the situation.
Police used water cannon, lobbed teargas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the demonstrators. The demonstrators clashed with police. The high-security zone houses the high-profile Ministries of Home, Defence, External Affairs, Finance, the Cabinet Secretariat, Prime Minister’s Office and the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Agencies
