SRINAGAR (ONS) – The Association of the Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) on Saturday said that justice in cases of enforced disappearances over the past two decades was still awaited despite documentary evidence against forces personnel involved.
Out of all cases documented by this organization so far in the Srinagar district, 82.25 per cent have eyewitness accounts of the direct involvement of the security forces, yet no action has been taken till date, APDP chairperson Parveena Ahangar said.
She said that the central and the state governments were using draconian laws like the AFSPA and the PSA to shield personnel involved in such cases and shift the burden of proof to the kin of victims.
Ridiculous statements are being issued by the governments from time-to-time about the number of the enforced disappearances in the state of J&K, which gives a clear picture of their frustration and non-seriousness over the issue, she said.
Instead of delivering justice to the already existing cases, where the perpetrators are roaming free, both the state and the central government are busy hushing up this issue and safeguarding the perpetrators, using draconian laws like AFSPA, PSA, etc, she said.
Had these governments been serious, they would not have been using these unlawful shields to protect their democracy and to block the road to justice, she said, demanding the repeal of the AFSPA and Indias ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
