Srinagar: Even as they are knocking doors of separatist leaders and plan on other political and civil society actors, at least seventeen thousand village councilors including their heads are seriously mulling mass resignation, owing to indiscriminate killing of their colleagues in past four years.
During the recent poll campaign, at least four such persons were done to death by armed assailants, mainly in South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Kulgam districts.
Syed Ali Geelani, Chairman of Hurriyat Conference G , while condemning the killings has already alleged that most of the panchayat members were being used as informers by police and army. Geelani’s assertion has reinforced the unease among panchayat members, who now feel caught between devil and the deep sea.
Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Association Wednesday said the option to opt out of the Panchayat system was still open and a final decision would be taken after due deliberations.
Today we met two pro-freedom leaders and in the coming days we will meet other pro-freedom leaders, civil society, Kashmir Economic Alliance, Doctors Association and others. We will hear what they have to say and finally we’ll take final decision, he said. If resignation would be ultimate solution, we will leave honorably.
He accused mainstream parties of exploiting Panchayat members. We want to expose them. They made us powerless because we are threat to them. We are barriers for them in loot and that is why they are not in favour of grass root democracy, he said.
