Srinagar, Sep 22: A strange, fearsome creature has put a suburban locality on edge for the past several days, sparking off frantic demands for its swift capture.
The large lizard-like animal, not known in Kashmir, has burrowed a hole in a private compound and crawls out periodically to feed, frightened Lawaypora residents said during protests today.
It is surmised to have come with a truck-load of clay transported for filling in a plot of land in the locality.
Swinging into action after residents of the area poured into central Srinagar in protest, wildlife authorities have laid traps around the animals lair to capture it.
Though there were no reports of the creature having attacked anyone, locals are too scared to venture in the vicinity of the compound because of its unusual size and menacing looks.
Its darting tongue adds to the animals threatening appearance, locals said.
With speculation rife, some said that it could be giant lizard found in African deserts and other hot and dry regions.
The wildlife warden at the Hokarsar reserve, Abdul Rauf, said that the creature could be the carnivorous monitor lizard which grows up to three feet in length.
We have laid traps, and it is only after the creature is captured that it can be properly identified, he said.
