SRINAGAR: Emboldened by the police apathy burglars are striking at will in Srinagar and elsewhere.
Amid tight police security, unidentified burglars last night made an unsuccessful attempt to loot branch of J&K Bank located at Nowhatta chowk in the old city.
Police sources said that some unidentified persons tried to break into the bank branch during the dead of the night however, they could not break the lockers and left the bank without taking away anything.
According to the branch manager Shakeel Ahmed burglars had entered into the bank from the backside. They seem to have used axe and hammer to smash the lockers but failed in their attempt and escaped empty handed, he said.
A police team reached on the spot and after assessing the situation initiated investigation.
We have registered a case in this regard and investigation has been taken up to nab the burglars, SP city North Tahir Saleem said.
The said branch remained closed till afternoon and was opened up for customers only after the completion of all formalities.
Unsuccessful attempt to loot Shrine
At least three burglars made an unsuccessful attempt to loot the revered shrine of Naqashband Sahib in nearby Khawja Bazar area.
Police sources said that at least three burglars from Nishat area arrived in an auto-rickshaw (JK013-2466) at Naqashband Sahib Shrine. One of them tried to open the gate of the shrine but when he failed to open it, the burglar opened the gate of the Masjid. The police guard fired three rounds in air and was successful in getting hold of one of the burglars, said SP City North Tahir Saleem. He said police was looking at the case from various angles.
The arrested burglar has been identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Dar son of Khurshid Ahmed resident of Brein Nishat. During investigation, it was revealed that the burglars were three in number. We will hopefully nab the duo who escaped from the scene, Saleem said.
He further said that preliminary investigation reveals that they had arrived at the shrine with an intention to loot it. But any other angle cant be ruled out. We are investigating the case thoroughly, SP City said.
