SRINAGAR: Normal traffic flow from Srinagar to Jammu resumed after the road was cleared on Tuesday afternoon. The stranded vehicles were also allowed to move to their respective destinations. The highway was closed on past Saturday following heavy snowfall at Banihal Tunnel and Pantitop.
A traffic police official tsaid that BECON cleared the road at 11 and the stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards Jammu. He said that there were traffic jams due to anti-PDD demonstrations at various places on Highway.
After two days of its closure due to heavy snowfall, the Srinagar-Jammu highway,the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the world opened for vehicular traffic on Tuesday afternoon, leading to clearance hundreds of stranded vehicles, he said.
The traffic official said subject to fair weather conditions, traffic along the highway would move from Srinagar towards Jammu side on Wednesday.
He further said that more than 4000 vehicles, including both passenger and goods-vehicles, crossed the Jawahar Tunnel and reached to Jammu on Tuesday.
The highway was closed on Saturday evening in the wake of heavy snowfall which triggered mudslides and shooting stones at many places along the 300-km road.
Meanwhile Director Metrological Department Sonam Lotus said weather is likely to remain dry for few more days. Weather in most parts of the state stayed dry today but due to the recent snowfall temperatures across the Valley have decreased significantly, he said. (CNS)
