Srinagar: A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday triggered a controversy by comparing other mainstream party leaders as “frogs”, saying that all the political leaders will join the fray when the elections are round the corner
Ashok Koul made these remarks after hoisting tricolor at the BJP’s party office here on Saturday.
The BJP leader said that PM Narendera Modi has announced that the elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held and there will be ministers and chief minister. He said his party too, wants elections to take place in the Union Territory.
“Delimitation exercise is already on and when it is completed, assembly polls will be held,” Koul said.
“We need to be ready about the new political process,” he added.
Replying to a question that some mainstream party leaders have announced to boycott assembly polls, Koul said the same leaders had made these statements during Panchayat polls too.
“They didn’t contest panchayat polls, but joined poll fray in Parliamentary election. I bet when poll bugle for the Assembly will be blown, all these mainstream leaders will come out of their homes like frogs and join the poll pray,” the senior BJP leader said.
In another question about the demands of statehood, Koul said that government of India is committed to restore the state status of Jammu and Kashmir
“But for that all guns should fall silent. Yesterday, two policemen were killed. What was their fault? One of the slain policemen was supposed to get engaged today,” he said.
“When people would start moving on rounds without fear, statehood will return,” he added.
About the security concerns of BJP workers, he said government and the police have already taken some steps and more will be done in the days ahead.
When asked about the suspension of low speed internet on I-Day, the BJP leader said that when the last gun of militants will fall silent and separatist activities will cease, statehood and high speed internet should be restored on the very day. (With KNO inputs)
