SRINAGAR: Kashmir University Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad today declared Najwa Shabir undergraduate student from Womens College M A Road winner of the Essay Competition on multiculturalism organised jointly by Department of Students Welfare and British High Commission New Delhi.
The purpose of the competition was to strengthen the existing relationship between University of Kashmir and British High Commission and give the winning student a chance to have firsthand experience of society in the UK and to acquaint with different aspects of multi- cultural Britain.
It is the big achievement for me and my institution said visibly jubilant Najwa Shabir while receiving the felicitation at the hands of Vice Chancellor in presence of other top dignitaries of Kashmir University. The award offers Najwa a one week sponsored tour to the UK which would include visits to historical sites, academic institutions and cultural events along with peer group interactions. Interestingly, Najwa had advocated home as the basic unit to begin the struggle for multiculturalism.
Vice Chancellor in his address to the participants of Essay competition hoped that Department of Students Welfare continues to hold such events to give chance to students to consolidate and share their experiences. Congratulating Najwa for this brilliant achievement Vice Chancellor hoped this will inspire other students to move forward and win laurels for their institutions and the society at large. Vice Chancellor congratulated Dean Students Welfare Prof. Nilofer Khan and her team for organising such a big event.
Mr. Alex Bamford, Head External Political Affairs, British High Commission while conveying the name of the winner to Vice Chancellor also congratulated Najwa for this award.
In his address Dean Academic Affairs Prof A. M Shah hoped that youth are able to make good use of all such platforms aimed at broadening their world view on issues concerning the human well being and existence.
The invited key note speaker Prof. Gul Mohd Wani Director Institute of Kashmir Studies said that youth are important to multiculturalism societies particularly in a region like south Asian where we have more youth than in the developed part of the world. Prof. Wani added that one way to overcome narrow identity at ideological frames is to promote the idea of south Asian State. He said that civil society and private sector has an important role to play in channelizing dynamism, energy, creativity of the youth so that multiculturalism and co- existence is promoted.
Earlier in her welcome Dean Students Welfare highlighted the role of such competitions in the life of student community and hoped that like always students would continue to show their enthusiasm in the co curricular activities of Department of Students Welfare. She thanked the British high commission for making this event possible.
Dean Research Kashmir University Prof. Khurshed Iqbal Indrabi and Dean College Development Council Prof. Ghulam Mustafa shah were present on the occasion. Assistant Dean Students Welfare Mr. Showkat Shafi presented vote of thanks on the occasion.
Pertinently 51Undergraduate students from various affiliated colleges participated in the essay competition titled What Role Can Youth Play in Making Multiculturalism a Success in Society sponsored by British High commission. After evaluation from 3 experts 7 best Write ups were finally shortlisted from the Essay competition and sent to commission office in Delhi for final selection of the winner.
