SRINAGAR: Army on Tuesday claimed to have killed an unidentified militant in an encounter at Lolab sector in north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
Reports said that acting on a tip off, armys 18, 28 Rashtriya Rifles and SOG cordoned off the upper belt of the Affan forest area Mehandiwali Behak, Lalpora in Lolab late this evening.
As the troops started combing operations, the militants hiding in the forest area opened heavy fire upon forces, triggering a gun-battle, reports said.
A senior army official said that on the basis of specific intelligence input joint team of army and police cordoned off the area at 5.00 p m today and around 5:45 militants holed inside the forest area opened heavy fire upon the forces. The fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce gunbattle.
So far one militant has been killed and the operation is still going on, he said adding that 4 to 5 militants believed to be under trap.
