KULGAM: To boost the trout fish production and to restore the pride of river Veshow among anglers, the Department of Fisheries today stocked 3500 fingerlings in the river at Aharbal which is ideal habitat for the species. The stocking was made at three different identified spots.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulgam and Assistant Director Fisheries Kulgam and other officials of the department were present on the occasion.
Additional Deputy Commissioner while adding on the occasion The Kulgam is endowed with hydro potential which is suited for aquatic life especially for trout and other in indigenous fish species.
He said that this venture would attract the foreign tourists who are fond of angling in the cold waters of Kashmir. This will be a prime source of income for the department besides attracting tourists to explore the virgin beauty of this tourist spot, he added.
He further added that a number of natural rivers and confluences are best habitation for these species which guarantees ample fish rearing opportunities for the fish rearing under public and private sector. He appealed the unemployed educated youth of the district for coming forward for setting up fish rearing and harnessing the suitable water resources.
On the occasion, Assistant Director Fisheries Kulgam, Shabir Ahmad while deliberating on the occasion about the importance of stocking and trout fingerlings and fish rearing said that stocking in other rivers of the district will further boost the trout culture. He said that about 60,000 of trout fingerlings have been kept available at Hatchery Farm Chancer for stocking in rivers and distribution among the fish rearing unit holder which are also being provided fish feed. The department has adopted no profit no loss basis in these schemes.
It is pertinent to mention here that Vashow Nalla has already a good number of natural breed of Rainbow and Brown trout besides schizothorax and the stocking will further promote the quantity of species which will be good for anglers coming for angling in the Valley. The department is going to raise about 3 lakh fingerlings this year in the district.
