TRAL: Thousands of supporters of Syed Ali Geelani, disappointed at not seeing him here, protested government restrictions and clashed with police today.
Geelani was scheduled to address people in Khanqah Faiz Panah Tral today but was denied permission to visit southern township and placed under house arrest in Srinagar.
Earlier large number of people were seen moving towards Tral from adjoining villages to listen to the octogenarian leader. Amid pro-freedom slogans people, especially youth on motor bikes, were seen hoisting green and blue flags. We were here to listen to our leader but feel disappointed as the government has again placed him under house detention, said an ardent supporters of Geelani.
Reports said that Faiz Panah Tral, where Geelani intended to address people, was adorned with flowers and pro-freedom posters. Most of the people left the venue after hearing the news about Geelanis arrest, however, hundreds of them regrouped at Faizpanah and started chanting pro-freedom slogans.
Later Hurriyat Conference (G) District President Ghulam Nabi Andrabi addressed the gathering. As the rally came to an end, youth in gathering marched towards Bus Stand and resorted to stone pelting on police. Police use tear smoke shells to disperse them. The clashes between police and the youth continued for hours.
