SRINAGAR: Eight people were killed and one injured when a Tata-Sumo skidded off the road and fell into the Chenab River at Kuligarh in Kishtwar district.
According to the reports received nine passengers were on board the vehicle (Jk06 2656) when it fell into the gushing Chenab. Seven of them were killed on the spot while one was seriously injured after he jumped off the vehicle when it plunged into river.
Police said the ill-fated Sumo was on its way from Saroor to Thatri Kishtwar.
Reports said the people present at the accident site informed the police and district administration. The rescue team was able to recover injured Sushil Kumar from the river who was immediately airlifted to Jammu for treatment.
A police official identified the deceased as driver Rajinder Kumar, Abdul Kabir Mir, Ashiq Hussain, Kuldeep Kumar ,Teerat Ram, Kotwal Chand and Dev Raj.
