SRINAGAR: Taking a strong exception to the government of India proposal of building a wall on the border in Jammu area aimed at stopping infiltration, Mohammad Yasin Malik chairman Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Monday said the move is fraught with serious implications and the Front will not act as a mute spectator to the development.
Malik said that any demarcation on the Line of Control (LOC), will result into more instability and destruction in the Himalayan region. We have seen and the history bears witness to the fact that how the great wall of Berlin was erected and how it was devastated by the law of nature later.
He said similarly, the consequences and repercussions of the proposal will be dangerous and if New Delhi raises the wall along the LoC and border in Jammu area, the same can impede the resolution of Kashmir issue.
Pertinently, the proposal raising a wall on border in Jammu is apparently aimed at stopping infiltration and continuous ceasefire violations from the Pakistani side. The government of India has reportedly decided to raise a 10-metre high embankment running along the 197-Km stretch of the International Border in Jammu sector.
The serpentine wall will pass through 118 villages in Jammu district. Seen from the Pakistani side, the border will be demarcated clearly by first a fence, a trench and then the 10-metre high wall. A strip of land as wide as 135 feet is being acquired for the purpose, to accommodate several bunkers and outposts for the Border Security Force.
Malik, whose party demands independence for both the sides of Kashmir, further stated that the move will be sternly opposed and that the leadership here will not remain mute spectators. We will act accordingly and oppose any such action that further distances Kashmir from its resolution.
We want to ask India what it wants to get out of it, why it is playing the tactics that corner our youth and make them pessimistic. If any such action is performed it would reveal to the world that India is not serious in resolving Kashmir, Malik said.
Embankment to secure local populace: IG
Asserting that the situation along the 198 kilometre stretch of international border is peaceful, Inspector General BSF, Jammu Frontier, S S Tomar today said the Border Security Force is soon going to raise embankment from Akhnoor Sector to Kathua to secure the local populace.
“To secure the local population residing along the international border from falling in the range of firing from across the border at the time of tension on the border, the BSF soon will be raising an embankment covering the entire international border from Akhnoor to Kathua,” Mr Tomar told reporters at the sidelines of a function here this morning.
The IG said that the embankment will be 135 feet wide and 10 metre high, which will be constructed by the Central Public Works Department in assistance with the BSF.
“The land will be acquired from 122 villages along the border in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts with the help of the state government,” he said and added that the project is in final stage and will commence soon.
“We will also be discussing the matter of raising embankment with the Pakistan Rangers,” he said adding that the embankment will secure the people in the bordering belts to work safely in the fields located close to the fence.
