KUPWARA: At least five soldiers were injured after militants fired upon a military convoy in frontier district of Kupwara Saturday morning.
Police sources said that shortly after an army convoy left convoy ground in Drugmulla, unidentified gunmen fired upon the vehicles near Dhobi Mohalla which resulted in the injury to at least five jawans. He said that driver of on the vehicles lost control and skidded off the road resulting in injuries to soldiers.
Official sources said that militants opened heavy fire on an army bus, part of the convoy near Sheikh-ul-Alam B.Ed College in Drugmulla area at 10:20 a.m.
After the attack the driver, Sepoy Thovise (belt no. 14826847 Y) of 528 ASE battalion of the bus lost control over the vehicle and it rammed into a tree on the road side, sources said, adding that while one solider sustained bullet injury, four others received minor injuries after bus hit the tree.
The militants, believed to be four in number managed to escape through the village into the forests adjoining it, sources said.
The attack created panic and the traffic was stranded for several hours on Kupwara-Srinagar National Highway.
Soon after the attack, army cordoned off the area and launched search operation. However, no one was arrested during combing operation. Militants reportedly managed to flee from the spot leaving behind a bag which carried a live RPG round and few clothes.
Talking to reporters, Inspector General of Police Kashmir zone, Abdul Gani Mir said that search operation was carried out soon after the attack.He however put the number of injured soldiers at only one.
An army jawan has been injured in the attack and hunt has been launched to nab the militants, he said.
Mir further said that militancy is a challenge for them and they are facing this challenge eloquently. While replying to a question, IGP said that there are 120 to 125 militants present in Kashmir Valley.
