Srinagar: South Asian Association on Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Disaster Management Centre, New Delhi in collaboration with Department of Geography, University of Kashmir is holding week long Regional Training Programme on, Children Safety including Children with Special Needs in South Asia from 6th November 2013.
Speaking on the context of the programme Coordinator Prof T A Kanth said that children are one of the most vulnerable groups of a community during an extreme event. He said that children in general and children with special needs in particular, require special assistance during a disaster. Prof Kanth added that it imperative to focus on the protection of the children by adopting effective mitigation measures.
SARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC), New Delhi in collaboration with Department of Geography and Regional Development, University of Kashmir is conducting a one week SAARC Regional Training Programme on Children Safety including Children with Special Needs in South Asia. Prof T A Kanth informed that the training programme will be attended by a number of delegates from various SAARC countries India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Besides this, a number of representatives from various Jammu & Kashmir State Departments like Directorate of School Education, Directorate of Health Services, Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services, Civil Defence and IMPA , Srinagar. A number of resource persons of national and international repute will form the part of training imparting group. Mr. M. Shashidhar Reddy, vice chairman, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi, Dr. Muzaffer Ahmad, member, National Disaster Authority (NDMA) , New Delhi, Dr. Santosh Kumar, Director, SAARC, Disaster Management Centre (SDMC), New Delhi will be among the important dignitaries for the inaugural session of the said training programme. The training programme is coordinated by Prof. T. A. Kanth, Department of Geography, University of Kashmir. The said training programme focuses on framing the action plan for Care, Protection and Participation of Children in Disasters in all the SAARC member countries.
Prof M S Bhat Head department of Geography said that the main aim of the course is to address the unique needs of children prior to, during and after a disaster and issues of their day to day life. The initiative will provide guidance and direction to the participants in evolving ideas of efficient mechanism for the safety and unique needs of children regionally. The training course would cover broader topics related to the safety of children including children with special needs with emphasis on member countries of SAARC.
