JAMMU: Agriculture Commissioner, Department of Agriculture & Cooperatives (DAC), Government of India, Dr J. S. Sandhu, inspected various agricultural technologies like demonstration on green manuring, System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and line transplanting of paddy crop in clusters
The Commissioner was on a field visit to Partap Singh Pura (Lalyana), Chak Majra, Majua Uttami villages of Bishnah area and Sarore village of Samba.
The Agriculture Commissioner interacted with a wide cross section of farming community and reviewed the arrangements of seeds and other inputs for ensuing Rabi Season.
Director Agriculture, Jammu, Ajay Khajuria, who accompanied the Agriculture Commissioner apprised that about 80 farmers of Chorli Panchayat have been covered under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) Rice during current season and assistance was provided on quality seed of traditional prized variety of Basmati-370 and Dhaincha (Sesbania sps), micronutrients viz; Zinc Sulfate, plant protection measures etc. He further apprised that the farmers have been motivated to adopt the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in which 8-10 days old paddy seedlings are transplanted at 25 cms spacing there by resulting in saving of seed and water by 40-50% and enhancement of tillering and yield.
The Commissioner accompanied by a team of officers visited village Majua Uttami of Chak-Hassal zone where mechanical sowing of Potato by Potato-Ridger-Cum-Planter was demonstrated at the farmers field. The farmers during interaction told the visiting officers that with the Potato-Ridger-Cum-Planter one can do sowing with preparation of ridges in an area of 5 acres in a day there by labour saving to the extent of 80% and thus very useful at peak sowing time when scarcity of labour is felt acutely.
The Commissioner also took stock of the assistance being provided to the farmers under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) and emphasized on the need to avail benefits of Kissan Credit Cards to augment investment in agriculture for realizing higher production and productivity. The Bittergourd crop raised under Bower System at village Sarore (Jakh Zone) was of special interest for the team. It was disclosed that the Bower System is being popularized for the climbing type vegetables like like Bittergourd, Bottlegourd, Cucumbers, Pumpkins etc through demonstrations under Vegetable Initiative for urban clusters. It is a new initiative by the department aimed at enhanced production of quality and disease free vegetables for longer periods of time and giving better remuneration to the farmers.
