SRINAGAR: In a bizarre incident a mosque prayer leader in the city murdered a man to further illicit relationship with his wife. Prayer leader (Imam) Mohammad Amin Nayak arrested by the police and booked for murder was produced before reporters today.
Giving details, Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, S A H Bukhari said that on September 30th this year Noor Mohammad Khanday resident of Bund Qamarwari lodged a missing report at Police Post Qamarwari regarding his son-in-law Shah Nawaz Ahmad Dar a resident of Chewa, Budgam.
He reported that his son-in law went to the local mosque to offer Isha prayers on 29th of September but did not return to his in laws home.
Police started a search for the missing person by collecting evidence to know his whereabouts. On 3rd October police fished out body of Shah Nawaz from the river Jehlum at Maloora. Inquest proceedings under 174 Cr. PC were initiated and accordingly, a special team was constituted to ascertain the cause of the suspicious death, said SSP Srinagar.
He further mentioned that the deceased was wearing a Pheran in which an ID card of Molvi Amin Naik resident of Chimmer, Kulgam who is working as an Imam of Masjid Abu-Turab at Bund, Qamarwari was found. Later Nayak admitted that the Pheran belonged to him. During the course of investigation the in-laws of deceased as well as other relatives were questioned wherein it came to fore that the deceased and his wife were having a strained relationship. Later police also found out that the Molvi Amin Naik used to visit the house of in-laws of the deceased number of times daily.
According to Police, the call details of the Molvi and the wife of the deceased were analyzed and it was noticed that Molvi Naik had been in constant touch with the wife of the deceased in odd hours of the night for long durations.
Molvi Naik was put to sustained questioning and he confessed that he had developed illicit relationship with the wife of deceased while he (Shahnawaz) was a hindrance between them, police said.
Police said, Naik hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Shahnawaz.
On 29th September the deceased Shahnawaz visited the room of Molvi after Isha prayers and narrated before him the tale of his bitter relationship with his wife requesting him to help find the remedy.
Police says acting on his plan to eliminate Shahnawaz, Molvi advised him to recite a Wazeefa some versus of Quran on a river bank. He gave him a rosary (Tasbi) with directions to recite verses 313 times on the bank of a flowing river where nobody could see him.
On 29.09.2013 Molvi took Shahnawaz to banks of Jehlum near Cement bridge (Qamarwari) and asked him to close his eyes and recite the Wazeefa. The moment Shahnawaz started reciting Wazeefa the Naik pushed him from behind resulting in Shahnawazs drowning, the SSP said.
He further said that from evaluation of evidence in hand it has been established that the deceased has been killed by Molvi Amin Naik with the intention and motive to remove the hindrance in order to carry on his illicit relationship with the wife of the deceased. A case FIR number 304/13 under section 302, 109 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) was subsequently registered against the Molvi Naik in police station Parimpora.
The SSP, Srinagar further requested all the Masjid Intizamia Committees to verify the antecedents of persons before selecting them as Imams for their mosques.
