Srinagar: In a case of sheer negligence and callousness in the times of a pandemic, a quarantined student declared Covid free by the health officials has tested positive for the virus and infected four of his family members.
The 21-year-old student from Jawalapora village of Budgam was put under quarantine at a government run centre in Narbal on his return from Rajasthan, reports said Saturday. The student’s samples were collected by the Block Medical Officer Magam on May 10 and he was let off even when the test reports were yet to come.
“The student was allowed to leave due to the intervention of a senior doctor. The BMO released the boy with a hope that his test report will come negative. However, that didn’t happen,” sources said.
But contrary to the BMO’s belief, the student’s report came positive for coronavirus. Four of his family members came positive for coronavirus today, setting off the alarm bells ringing among the health officials, sources added.
According to the reports, the student as well as his family members have been put under isolation while the health officials have started contact tracing.
Meanwhile, BMO Magam Dr Taha has given clean chit to the infected student and termed this serious lapse as a miscommunication and judgment of error.
“Due to internet suspension, we got an incomplete report and I thought the student in question is Covid-19 free,” he said, adding “It was not his fault at all,” (KNT)
