Discussion on Gen Singh’s remarks deferred

Srinagar: The discussion over former army chief V K Singh’s remarks about army’s  funding to Jammu and Kashmir politicians was today deferred by the Legislative Assembly till Monday.

Speaker Mubarak Gul announced the decision after BJP, NPP and other Jammu based members of the Legislative Assembly sought deferment of the discussion due to Navratra. As the House started its proceedings, Ashok Khajuria, the BJP MLA submitted that the discussion on former army chief remarks which was scheduled to be held today be postponed till Monday.

Almost all PDP MLAs, National Panthers Party MLAs and CPI (M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami supported Khajuria’s submission.

Minister for law and parliamentary affairs Mir Saifullah later said the government had no objections if Khajuria’s submission is accepted by the Speaker. On Friday Mehbooba Mufti, the opposition PDP leader had sought the timing of discussion over retired general Singh’s remarks. She was informed by Speaker that it will be held on Saturday.

Gen Singh’s made his remarks saying army was funding politicians in Jammu and Kashmir after a newspaper report alleged that minister for agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir had received Rs 1. 19 Crores from army’s TSD unit to topple Omar Abdullah’s government.

The former army chief however, rejected the allegations that Mir was paid to topple Omar’s government saying funds had been given to many ministers in the state since 1947 for different jobs and purposes.

In its privilege motion, moved by National Conference the party sitting and former ministers have demanded that general Singh be brought Kashmir to face the House. However, this motion is pending before the Speaker for a direction.
