SRINAGAR: Militants struck in broad day light in capital city on Monday morning killing a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel on the spot and injuring another critically.
Hizbul Mujhideen later claimed responsibility for the attack saying that it was carried out in response to recent Shopian killings and oppressive measures adopted by police towards youth of Kashmir.
Eyewitnesses said that two CISF jawans were attacked when they got down from their vehicle near Naaz Cinema for purchasing vegetables. They said the duo, without weapons, approached the market where waiting militants shot them at point blank range. Market was abuzz with activity when the incident took place giving ample cover to militants to mingle in the crowd and escape.
The attack took place only four days after police claimed that they cracked the June 24 Hyderpora military convoy attack by nabbing all the militants involved
Senior Superintendent of Police, Aashiq Bukhari told reporters that militants used silencer pistol and after carrying out the attack fled from the spot. It is not clear how many militants were part of the attack. One jawan was killed while another was injured in the attack, he said.
The deceased CISF jawan was identified as D.Naik son of Gopi Nath Nayak resident of Hatpora while the injured Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Bhalwa, Muzaffar-Nagar, UP, was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Soon after the attack, top police and CRPF officials reached the spot while police cordoned the area to for searches. However, no one was arrested during the operation.
Pertinently, the CISF provides security cover to industrial units and other establishments located all over India. It also provides consultancy services to private industries as well as other organizations. Last time CISF was in news in January 2011 when its personnel allegedly killed a youth Altaf Ahmed in Boniyar area of Uri tehsil.
Hizb claims responsibility
Meanwhile, Hizbul Mujhideen while claiming the responsibility for the attack said that such attacks would be carried out in future as well. A caller claiming to be the operations spokesperson of Hizb, Baleeg-u-Din told CNS on phone that its special squad carried the attack on Indian security personnel in response to Shopian killings.
Todays attack was carried out in response of recent Shopian killings and oppressive measures adopted by police towards youth of Kashmir, Baleeg-u-Din said.
