SRINAGAR: A member of J&K legislature Wednesday tabled a private bill in the Assembly demanding a complete ban on the sale of alcohol in the State.
Abdul Haq Khan, a member of legislative assembly from North Kashmirs Lolab constituency submitted a bill The Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition of Alcohol Bill, 2013 in state Assembly.
Informing about the bill MLA said the prohibition bill is against sale, consumption and promotion of liquor in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. It should be banned across the state as liquor is the root cause of all rising crimes in the society, he said.
Defending the bill Khan said the bill will, in no way, affect tourism in the Valley. The tourists are coming here to see heaven on earth not to drink alcohol, Khan said, adding that tourism cant be associated with alcohol.
There are only few business houses that are benefitting from this trade but government cant subside majority of the masses, who are much more affected due to this social evil, MLA added.
As per the statistics of the department of excise in J&K, the state has registered a sale of 496.13 lakh bottles of various types of liquor in 2012-13.
It has shown an increase of 30.51 lakh bottles than 2011-2012, which recorded a sale of 465.62 lakh bottles. In year 2010-11, J&K state sold 432.79 lakh bottles of liquor as per the date of the excise department.
Supporting the bill, president Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) and MLA Langate Er Rashid said, I totally support the prohibition of alcohol across the State urging members to lend support so that the bill is adopted immediately.
Even some BJP members are demanding the ban of liquor in the State and our so-called rulers are concerned about tourism instead of rising crime rates in the society, Rashid said.
