KARGIL: Despite its claims that the party enjoys majority in the newly elected Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, National Conference Tuesday allowed the election of Congress leader Asgar Karbalie as chairman of the Hill Council.
Karbalie was elected as the Chairman/ Chief Executive Councilor after his name was first proposed by the Councilor Stakchey Khangral and Mohammad Amir. The nomination was supported by the Councilor Ranbirpura Drass, Haji Shafi and all the 12 Councilors of Congress and its alliance partner.
The Minister for State Nazir Gurezi, SP Kargil Sujit Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan, former Minister Haji Nissar Ali and former MLA and President DCC Kargil Ghulam Raza were also present on this occasion.
The Councilors of National Conference and its allies did not attend the meeting.
We had the majority but following the directions of the party high command we stayed away from the voting process, senior leader and political advisor to CM, Qamer Ali Akhoon said, adding that there was no agreement between the two coalition partners on the voting rights of the four nominated members of the council. He said the National Conference has offered a huge sacrifice for the sake of coalition government in the state but added that all eyes would be on the Congress as how it delivers. We accepted the party high command decision and allowed Congress to form the council despite having an absolute majority. We would now hope Congress to deliver according to the aspirations of the people of Kargil, Akhoon added.
He however evaded a direct answer whether National Conference would withdraw its support in case Council did not perform as per the expectations of NC and its voters.
Definitely people would keep a close eye on the performance of the council. Lets wait and see how it performs, said Akhoon.
Pertinently the relations between the two allies were affected after National conference staked the claim to the council despite Congress having already done the same.
The things had gone bad to worse when the NC councilors defied the party high command directives of allowing Congress to form the council forcing Chief Minster Omar Abdullah to rush his close aids to Kargil for the damage control. However it was only in the coordination committee that the leaders of both the parties were able to break the deadlock which paved way for the Congress heading the council.
