PULWAMA: At least 14 policemen were injured when unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade at a police party resting outside District Hospital, Pulwama.
Reports said that after day long duty scores of policemen had gathered outside District Hospital Pulwama and were taking rest. Unidentified persons hurled a grenade which exploded with a bang injuring 14 policemen and a civilian. Seven policemen were referred to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses said that police and CRPF personnel fired some aerial shots soon after the grenade attack that created panic in the area. We exercised maximum restraint and did not aim at anyone. The policemen fired in air to defend themselves, said DySp Headquarters Sajad Ahmed.
The injured policemen have been identified as Ghulam Muhammad Dar (758), Manzoor Ahmed (757), Zahoor Ahmed Ganaie (100), Muhammad Shafi (302), Muhammad Yousf (514), Ghulam Nabi (848), Fayaz Ahmed (600), Gowhar Bhat (220), Bilal Ahmed (1595) and Aarif Shafi. One civilian, Bashir Ahmed from New Colony Pulwama suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, Hizbul Mujahideen claimed the responsibility for the attack saying that attack was carried out by its special squad.
Hizb Operational spokesperson, Baleeg-u-Din said on phone that such attacks would be carried out in future as well. Police and SOG are our target and our Mujhadeen would attack them in future as well, he said. (CNS)
