Srinagar: Welcoming the scheduled meeting of India and Pakistan Prime Ministers on the sidelines of UN General Assembly meeting, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday stressed upon the leaders of both nations to start result-oriented negotiations to solve Kashmir including other issues instead of confrontations.
Addressing a gathering at historic Jamia Mosque, Mirwaiz said that the meeting of leaders in New York provides them with an opportunity to re-start the peace negotiations. He said wars and bloodshed were no solution of issues since they have only brought sufferings and pain for Kashmiris and people of south Asia as a whole.
He said that Kashmir and other issues can be solved through negotiations and by making sure the participation of resistance leadership across the border in that process.
Mirwaiz said that Kashmir was being made economically dependent following a well orchestrated conspiracy and we Kashmiris are unintentionally supporting this policy.
In 1947 our state was fully self sufficient and even 30 years ago Jammu and Kashmir was more or less self sufficient in all sectors. However, now J&K can only fulfil its 30 percent of its agricultural needs, he added.
Hurriyat (M) chairman said that Kashmiri were fast turning their cultivable lands for residential and commercial purposes. Such a trend would prove detrimental for Kashmir economy. Horticulture, paddy, and other cultivable lands were the backbone of Kashmir economy and guarantees its self sufficiency, Mirwaiz said.
He noted with concern that the Government and mafia seem to be hand in glove as far as this issue is concerned. Political freedom is meaningless without economic freedom. We are consuming more and producing less. This will increase our dependency in every respect, he added.
